Derby High School were looking for a new dining facility to accommodate growing numbers in a light and inviting central hub where pupils and staff could dine and socialise together. Smart new changing facilities were part of the building design so that Derby High School could host internal and external sporting competitions on their new courts, which were also an important feature of the construction project.

The much-needed project looked in doubt in early 2023 as rising material costs had taken the new build project over its initial budget. A meeting between the Head Teacher and ourselves at The Society of Heads Conference in the Spring of 2023 enabled Modulek to respond to the schools need and demonstrate the efficiencies of modular construction. After an immediate site visit, our design team created a solution, that not only delivered in terms of design and programme, but also brought the whole construction project back within the school’s budget.
It was a priority that the building was delivered, installed and finished by Easter 2024. With the deadline set, offsite construction was instructed, and groundworks commenced.
After just 9 months the new building was handed over to Derby High School.
the building
The central dining area is bright and spacious and has been designed around a central serving area. A high specification kitchen has enabled the catering team to cook fresh meals and the outdoor terraced eating area provides another space for the older pupils to eat and socialise.
The changing rooms are a welcome addition the sporting facilities.
Landscaping and the multi-use courts were included within the turnkey service, which meant that as well as the new building, the courts, permitter fencing and parking areas were all included in the 9 month building programme.
