Modular Construction Trends in 2019

Modular Construction Trends in 2019

2019 looks to be an interesting year with the construction industry in the midst of a technology revolution. Construction companies across the globe are integrating new technologies, ideas and opportunities, advancing the world of construction even further!

One of the major construction trends in 2019 is modular construction itself. Although we know that modular construction methods have been around for years, it is only within the last eighteen months that we have seen a change in attitudes towards modular construction. Because construction of modular buildings can occur simultaneously with site and foundation work onsite, projects can be completed 30% to 50% sooner than  projects that are built using traditional methods of construction. It is of course the speed that is appealing to many, which has led in this paradigm shift in the world of construction. It is not just speed but the flexibility of how buildings can be used and the way that costly weather delays can be avoided as most modular construction occurs inside a factory.

Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR)  are going to open so many opportunities for the construction industry…The entire project will be able to be shown before it even starts, saving a lot of time and money. The construction process will become more efficient, as everyone that is part of the project will be able to finalise details before the construction process even begins!

Another major trend is BIM Technology. The emergence of an open, collaborative data system could act as a catalyst for a revolution in the way that we manage, design and develop a construction project. BIM is set to bring a greater level of accuracy to the building and design process, as well as empowering the exchange of project information between key project personnel. It’s further evolution is anticipated to increase the productivity and affordability of construction projects by the incorporation of revolutionary sustainability and safety measures. BIM is sure to become a game changer in the world of construction, so watch this space!

We also need to consider drones. Drones are already heavily used on a lot of construction sites. Site surveyors will be able to survey an entire site in a few minutes, as opposed to days, weeks and months, saving construction companies money. Drone technology is something that is continuously evolving, developing in its accuracy, and precision of its readings, leading to less human involvement. As drone technology is becoming increasingly efficient, more construction companies are embracing this technology.

Another key emerging trend in the world of modular construction is wearable technology e.g. fitbits etc. This is something that will help to improve the safety of construction workers on site, keeping them from constantly looking down at their instructions as they can now connect with one another via this technology. Additionally due to the many integrated GPS systems on wearable technology, workers can easily call for help and be located in the event of an emergency. Surely this is going to become mandatory at some point in the future?

Have you considered integrating smart devices into your building? Throughout 2019, technologies such as Alexa and Siri are set to be integrated into many buildings. Imagine being able to say Alexa, open the door! Not only that but smarter buildings will provide buildings with better energy efficiency, better lighting control, better air conditioning control and will therefore improve the quality of the building

So to conclude, it is without a doubt that 2019 will be a year where major breakthroughs in technology will advance the construction industry even further!
